The concept of professional foreign language teaching or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is rather new and sparsely investigated in Mongolian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning contexts. However, ESP as an area of applied linguistics has been investigated and developed since late 1960s in other parts of the world. ESP programs as a branch of applied linguistics are designed to meet specific needs of the learner in association with particular disciplines, occupations or activities, and enables learners to learn and develop discipline specific syntax, lexis, discourse, and semantics (Strevens, 1988). This presentation presents findings of a survey questionnaire study that was conducted among 200 second year Teacher Training School students who were undertaking the ESP course, which was taught with the help of a textbook “Reading professional texts” developed by a team of English language teachers of our school. The findings suggest that further work is needed in relation to ESP course content and teaching materials.
