Abstract The term ‘Value-based
English Education for Sustainable Development’ is defined from Mongolian
perspectives. It is the integration of
competences to become humanized through one’s continuous learning actions and
to be friendlier to the one world, nature-society-culture-time and real life
(Jadambaa 2009, 2010). This paper takes the term literally to refer to the
values, knowledge, and skills to contribute to a more sustainable future, while
recalling teachers’ and students’ previous knowledge and experiences regarding
the sustainability concepts. The paper discusses how ESD principles are integrated
into the Value-based English Education for Sustainable Development and
describes the experiential and ethnographical approaches which have already
been put into practice in Intercultural
Studies course taught at Mongolian National University of Education
(Tungalag 2009). It was highly commended at International Training on ESD in
Sweden and Thailand (2009) for its contribution to education for
sustainability. The theoretical approach the course is based on, some details
of the course itself, and the reaction of students are described in this paper.
