ENHANCING MONGOLIAN EFL LEARNERS’ SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH MEANINGFUL REPETITION

skill seems to be difficult for Mongolian learners studying at Mongolian School
of Teacher Education because of the lack of opportunities to practice English,
and thus they fail to achieve the standards required. This article analyzed the
use of meaningful repetition approach to help students develop speaking skill.
Meaningful repetition approach involves first simplifying a complex text using
simple language and simple sentences by the teacher then encouraging students
to retell the text. An observation and a peer observation methods were used for
a period of one semester to collect data. Following that, an evaluation was
conducted in the form of survey. The findings revealed that through the
meaningful repetition method, students were not only able to understand complex
texts that they struggled understanding before, but also were able to retell
the text using simple language and sentences. It was also identified that
students were able to engage in meaningful conversations by asking and
answering questions within the text context. This shows that teachers need to
be more creative in constructing interactive learning experiences for their
students and encourage them to use simple language and sentences as part of
students’ repertories of speaking skill. This research highlights the issue of
accepting students’ level of English language proficiency as intermediate just
because that is stated in the curriculum when in fact students have not reached
that level yet.
