Improving Higher Education Curriculum in Mongolia: An Action Research Study in Progress

Mongolian National University of Education teacher education faculty have not
been encouraged to draw upon theoretical studies as a means of improving
curriculum design and delivery. Because of national reform and previous
successful action research initiatives the university has changed and
conditions for innovation in teaching/learning in teacher preparation programs
have been created. The proposed presentation hopes that fellow teacher
educators will find our experiences useful, both as an example of action
research and as an emerging curriculum reform model. Our study seeks to address
two major areas in undergraduate elementary teacher education reform: to enable
students to experience "deep" learning and to facilitate the
development of student-centered teaching/learning environments. In our proposed
presentation we represent our research participants as a critical community of
faculty who want to improve the quality of teaching and learning in higher
education within the constraints and practical considerations imposed upon us
and who seek to be change agents of those constraints. Although not yet
complete, the outcome of the first phase of our action research cycle has
identified a key objective: to provide an appropriate framework for deep
learning, which we believe is necessary to encourage maximum student ownership
of the learning process.
